Howard Gardner

Howard Gardner (1983, 1993, 2002) suggests there are eight types of intelligence, or “frames of mind.” Also, all people have intelligence but some are more intelligent in certain areas. When you apply your strongest intelligence to your learning you will learn better. Verbal intelligence are people who express things through the use words and language. Mathematical intelligence are people who can work with mathematical operations and understand them. Spatial intelligence are those who have skills in visualizing in three dimensions. Bodily-kinetic intelligence are those who are physical and can manipulate things. Musical intelligence are those who can hear the pitch, melody, rhythm, and tone and be able to tell them apart. Interpersonal intelligence is to be able to understand and communicate with others. Intrapersonal are those who understand themselves. Naturalist intelligence is observing patterns in nature and understands systems of human-made things and natural things.

Even though I will be teaching math I am going to have to incorporate all of these different intelligences in my classroom (1.2). I am going to have to learn what each of my students strongest intelligence is so I can accommodate certain homework assignments for my students. I will have each of my students incorporate math into their strongest group of intelligence. For whatever their strongest intelligence is, I will give them the opportunity to make their own assignment for it. If some students would not like to make their own assignment, I will assign one for them that fits the needs of their strongest intelligence and math.
